Man acquitted of sexual assaultGREAT FALLS A jury Tuesday acquitted an illiterate man of attempted sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl two years ago.Arthur Eldon Campbell, 50, was described by his court-vappointed lawyer, John Keith, as an alcoholic with an elementary school education.Both sides agreed one night in April 1998, Campbell entered the sleeping girl’s basement room while he was staying atan acquaintance’s house after a night of drinking.Prosecutor Susan Brooke said the girl awoke with Campbell there and her jeans unbuttoned, at mid-thigh.Campbell claimed he was just waking the girl for school, as her mother had asked him to do earlier that night.
