Security Guard In GrenadeBlast DiesFRESNO (AP) —A security guard showered with flaming phosphorus when a Marine hand grenade exploded at a Merced shopping mall died en-route to San Francisco for more specialized treatment.Lewis Anderson, 18, of Merced, died Friday, six days after the phosphorus grenade burst In his face after a Marine recruiting display had been disassembled.Anderson was in critical condition tor most of the week at Valley Medical Center here with third degree burns over most of his body.. Marine .officials immediately launched an Investigation into how a live grenade and several other live weapons got on the display board. The results of the Investigation have not been released.“How a live grenade got on there, weTve got to find out,” said CWO Ronald Frazier after the blast. “We’re going lo investigate this thoroughly.The display was furnished to the Merced Marino recruiters by Company K, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines, a reserve unit headquartered in Stockton.
