In Racial AttackThe clipping in the d^ad man'spocket referred to- an incident outside the White Castile restaurant.; 1401 Bast Washington st . last January.Bert Mendenhall, auto mechanicwho resides at 711 Edgemont ave..parked his ear to enter the restaurant. A group of four whites were standing outside the door.As Mendenhall approached, Wright declared loudly:I hate niggers. If there is anything I hate worse than a nigger, it is another nigger.”I Mendenhall ignored the taunt, he said later, but as he went on the four jumped him from behind and threw him to the si lewalk. Although he is lame, he managed to i get hack to the car and draw a : gun.f The attackers then pulled him I out of the car and threw him again! to the walk. In the ensuing scram ble h shot Wright in the arm.‘ Mendenhall went to police headquarters and gave himself up. He i was subsequently fined by Judge | Saul 1. Rabb for carrying a pistol without a permit.Wright apparently prized the| ‘‘press notices” he got following | the incident.
