There are about 200 members of the gang, though many of them are now doing time in various penitentiaries. They are safe blowers, and their specialty is to rob banks and posfcofficos in small towns somewhere off the Lake Shore system.Tho records in the postoffice department will show hundreds of postoffice robberies in Ohio, Michigan and Indi-ana, and some in Illinois. Nearly all the bank robberies and safe blowings in these states within a hundred miles Of the Lake Shore mil way can be traced to members of this desperate gang of thieves.The hang-outs of the gang are in Cleveland, Elyria, Sandusky, Toledo, South Bend, Mishawaka, Chicago and a big gnllev or zavine in Indiana between South Bend and Mishawaka. Tho principal hang oat in In South Bend, where tho lawyers of the gang reside, and where there appears to be plenty of protection for the members through inSnencial politicians.Just on the outskirts of South Bend, near the ball grounds, is a road house kept by an old German, which ieheadquarters. If any officers appear in South Bend the fact is quickly tipped off to the gaug and the members go into a big ravine a few miles beyond tho city and remain under cover. The ravine is a very deep one and can be seen from the Lake Shore track.There Is a big cave in it where the gang stores supplies and have boer hauled in by the barrel.
