HereNew Braunfels police Detective Felix Roque, left, shows Mr, and Mrs. Edward McGar the Operation Identification list which was in the Police Department files proving the chain saw in the foreground to be McGar's by his social security number which was engraved on it. The saw was recovered when Roque and fellow policeman John McEachern stopped a car containing a suspected purse thief. With a search warrant the policemen investigated the car, finding the saw, the purse and other miscellaneous stolen objects. (Staff Photo)Although the use of Operation Identification is not widespread in New Braunfels, its success merits more attention.Last week the New Braunfels Police Department recovered a chain saw which was marked with its owner’s social security number. The PD had already checked its files and had identified Edward Elam McGar as the owner when McGar called in to report that his saw had been stolen.Fast work? Yes, and there was no confusion about it being McGar’s saw.Operation Identification is amazingly simple, and costs property owners nothing for a lot of protection. Each firehouse in New Braunfels has an engraving tool which may be checked out by citizens.A list is supplied to the citizen of what objects the Police Department recommends beOperation I den tifica tionengraved with the owner’s social security number. The owner takes the engraving tool home with him, engraves items such as television, heavy tools, cameras, stereos and bicycles, and makes two lists of the items along with their serial numbers. The owner than returns the engraving tool and one of the copies of the list to the fire department. The department, in turn, gives the list to the Police Department for safekeeping. In this way, when the police department recovers what they believe to be stolen goods, Z. quick flick through the files can turn up the owner by his social security number, if it is engraved on the goods.milIt turf els/ / “T /BAug. 1, 1974New- Braunfels, TexasIISDRegistrationUnder Way onMondayEDITOR’S NOTE: Thefollowing story ran one week early in last week's edition of the Herald.
