Brewer, as he is known to everyone here, is known to have left the city yesterday, going south on the early Chicago Alton passenger traio. He is under bond for appearanceto have answered “Guilty” or “Not i guilty” to the charge of buncoing Shoffuer in a fake foot race and realizing $6,000 thereby. His bond is signed by City Attorney Mortimer and is worth, on its face, $5,000.Mortimer sigued the t ond as Brewer’s attorney, and this was ac cepted by the justice’s court. It was a foregone conclusion that Brewer would have been bound over by the trial justice Thursday to answer to the grind jury, aud Brewer knew that oe would have to give a larger boud or go to jail and lay there awaiting final trial. Whether or not he could have given this bond is not known, but it is known that Brewer is not here at present.STATE WILL PROSECUTE.Brewer’s absence was spoken of tfltfjj day iu whispers by the lawyers of the victims here, and there was much speculation as to whether be will return.Aside from Brewer’s disappearance, the most important step thus far is the acceptance ol the case for prosecution by State’s Attorney William E. Shutt, jr., and his assistant, Horace Miller. They have taken hold of the prosecution iu a manner that gives hop© that the city will soon be rid of the gang Patton Patton, who have been re-tiined by Shoffuer, will continue to act for him, and at the same time assist the State's attorney in every manner possible.SHOFFNER PLAYED SAFE.Sboffner has had it so fixed that he will suffer no imprisonment for his part of the fake. He has promised, in return for immunity, to assist in the prosecution8 of the gang, not to accept the money he lost, which the gang has repeatedly offered him if be would stop the prosecution, and In every way to aid the State in finding other victims, go-betweens, stakeholders, etc. All this Shoffuer has done up to date.”OLD SETTLERS.Zack Boicourt’s County Fair Near Westport.
