Lately Superintendent McCartney determined to reopen the works with non-union men. Fortune Dogneaux, Frenchman, was engaged as foreman, lie arrived here Monday for the purpose of putting the works in order. The union men previously employed are Belgians. Some of them claim that the (ilass Company owes them back wages. The news that the works were to le opened with non-union men created great excitement and threats of violence were made. Yesterday afternoon Superintendent McCart- I ney. Fortune Dogneanx and a workman j were in the factory sorting glass when a: gang of the old workers surrounded the: place. The three men rushed to a room in 1 the etui of the building and barricaded the door. The mob attacked the place with ! bricks, stones and other heavy missiles. So j furious was the onslaught that the door | was broken down. McCartney and the I workman eluded the angry strikers and sought refuge in a house close by, barricading the doors.Fortune Oogneaux did not tare so well, lie was captured by the strikers, who deliberately gouged out his eyes, lacerating tin* eye balls a* a terrible manner, but inflicting no other injury. He will loose both aves and will probably die.One of the strikers said that the nonunion men would le helpless without the »id of the foreman, who was a skilled workman. Therefore they put out his eyes. Four at the strikers were arrested and warrants are out for sixteen more. The strikers threaten to burn the works to-night. A large force of men are now guarding them. Twenty non-union uu u arrived to-night No Attempt was made to injure them. The eigarmakers ami the local branch of the Typographical Union have extended tl»eir sympathy to the strikers and will aid them j j as much as possible. A telegram has been I tent to the president of the National Labor I Organization of the United States asking t for advice in the matter.
