FRIEDMAN OPENSSLAYING DEFENSEPicture on Page 37accounts of conditions in Germany.At one time, the elder Friedman said, his son told him:“You’ll have the same thing here iti two years.11The statement referred to -religious persecutions in Europe, the father declared.APPEARS APATHETICThroughout direct examination of his father, Friedman appeared apathetic, gazed off into space without looking at either the judge or jury.He was moved to sobs at one point, however, when his father mentioned the name of the young daughter whom Friedman shot to death.Cross examination of Friedman1s father, directed by Chief Assistant District Attorney J, Frank Coakley and dealing principally with the son’s financial affairs, continued this afternoon.Goodman said he would call Mel-burn Malhancy, a neighbor of the defendant, as his second witness.Selection of a jury of six men and six women, with one man silting as nn alternate, was completed late yesterdayBooth B. Goodman, defense counsel, indicated he expected to call about IS witnesses.The case is the first in Alameda Cmmty 1n bo bn^ort on a single plea of insanity (Friedman has already admitted the slayings) and the defense is being presented first since the type of plea places the burden of proof on the defendant.WIFE SHOT DOWNOn January 4, Friedman shot down his wife, Pauline, and their daughter, Marjorie, 4, and then turned the gun on himself. He recovered at Alameda County Hospital and was later removed to jail.Prior to the double murder and what he expected would be suicide, Friedman left notes saying that he had been brooding over persecution and oppression current in the world.
