April 30—Four gun-f|men fought a running battle with police in suburban Bellwood early today ij |—and the officers said one of the four, all of whom escaped, “looked like John Dillinger, the hunted killer.Another of them, said Police Lieutenant Joseph Hagemister, resembledGeorge “Baby Face Nelson, the littlegunner of the Dillinger gang, and a third wore the likeness to Henrv Fox, another Dillinger aide.The chase ended when the hood-Mlnms disarmed the officers. One ofthe men hit Policeman Harry Whalen over the head with a machine gun before speeding away into the darkness with his companions.Whalen and two other officers, Lt. Magemister and Policeman Gus Menze began the chase in police car when the gunmen’s machine failed to halt at 3 I a red light.t I Shots blazed back and forth as the two cars roared over a two-mile course towards Forest Park. The po-tjlice caught up when the other machine pulled at a filling station for gasoline. Two of the gunmen jumped out, one armed with a machine gun. forced the three officers to give up their weapons and struck Whalen. The other twro men. remaining in theircar, held machine guns on the officers.The four then resumed their flight,eluded Forest Park policemen, whoattempted to intercept them. The gunmen’s car. a new' dark Ford sedan, was believed to have stolen from I)r. Meriee Sweeley at Melrose. The skirmage as a rumor of Dillinger’s death was gaining circulation.This report had it that the desperado may have been mortally wounded when he and his pals blazed their way out of the little Bohemian resort nearMercer, Wis., a week ago this morning.
