Missoula, April 28. — Lindaej I Cyres is being held at the count jail on suspicion of arson as result of the fire which destroyeda 12-room tourist apartment buSJd-ing nearing completion betweer East Broadway and East Froni street on the hanks of Rattlesnake creek Wednesday forenoon. Cyres was arrested by Police Officei James Phelan as he was heading toward the Northern Pacific yards Wednesday afternoon.Cyres, Phelan said, had a hole burned in the l#ft leg of his over-I alls and smelled strongly of smoke, the odor being exactly like that of the burning house. Cyres ex-I plained the burned pants by saying that he had slept too close to a burner Tuesday night, but of fleers declared that lie could not have slept so close to the hurnei without being scorched himself.Officers said that a strong odoi of burning oil was detected in the burning building, and that th* deep black smoke coming from I the fire after it was discovered could not have come from burning wood.The fire was reported at 9:4 bo'clock, and shortly after 11 o'clock the building was a flame-ruined shell with only a few new boardsunscorched. The firemen succeeded in preventing the spread of th' flames to a small frame house a few feet away from the burning building, facing Jackson street.Mrs. Sarah Easley Plun »m-owner of the destroyed building and proprietor of the apartment house at 705 4 East Broad v ; on the front of the lot occupied by the burned structure, named Cyres as the possible cause or the fire, and swore out a complain: against him later charging destruction of the building. The va-rnn: for his arrest charged malicious trespassing.The apartment house was n-v quite completed.
