SPKINOFIKD, III., April JO —The law-al ding ct zens of Springfield, and the preachers especially, are full of righteous indignation tonight over the disgraceful proceedings in the court of Justice North this moruiug at the trial of the gang of gamblers which seems to control the municipal affairs of the city. When the case was called none of the gamblers appeared, and the justice fined them SiUO each on their bonds. The justice had scarcely imp »sed the tines when Tom Brewer, the * Mike McDonald of 8pringfieid,” entered the court room very much under the influence of liijtior. There were a score or more of iadtenof the Wo-man'sChristian Temperance Union present, and all the leading misters of the clly, to see that the ends of justice were not tampered with. Brewer turned on the ladles ai d. In the most intuiting language called them cranks and seekers after notoriety. Uev. K. lt;i. Hobbs of the Second Methodist church was talking to one of the atlornei s when Brewer with a*i obscene epithet, ordered turn out of the court, threatening to smash his jaw If he did not go. This Is but a sample of many like instances that occurred and et neither the court nor the haliiIts offt-red to restrain the irate gambler. The ministers held a short informal meeting after court adjourned and decided to call a mass meeting on Tuesday. The gamblers took au appeal to the circuit court
