Murdered at Midnight.Des Moines Special to Chicago Times: R. M. Stubbs, mayor of the town of Polk City, a station on the Chicago A North western railway, was murdered in hi* house at 3 o’clock this 'Saturday) morning by two unknown assassins, who entered his house by the rear window, passing through tho kitchen, dining, and sitting rooms to the hall and stairway. Mrs. Stubbs and her hualwmd occupied a room at the head of the stairs, and while making the ascent the wife beard them and aroused her husband. Mr. Stubbs arose in bed aud asked what was wanted. The answer came back, emphasized with profane and obscene words: “Lie down, or you will be shot. Mr. Stubbs told the intruder to got out, and sprang out of bed. As ho did so a dark lantern was turned on him and a pistol shot was tlrod, the ball striking him in the loft breast, lust below the nipple, penetrating his heart. He staggered to tlie head of the stairs, tottered a moment, and fell headlong down the flight, a corpse. The murderers immediately lied through the front door, mounted horses, wnich ha 1 been posted near the front gate, aud rapidly disappeared in the night. The object of the murderers was evidently burglary. The murdered man was a member of the milling firm of Eggleston A Stubbs. Some time last summer their safe was blow n open and robbed of its contents. Since that time tho funds of the firm have been kept by Mr. Stubbs in his house, as there is no bank in Polk City. He was also treasurer of the school district aud of the Odd Fellows' lodge. In these several capacities he would naturally handle a considerable amount of funds. His bankers in Dea Moines state that ho had notdoposited anything with them recontly, and they are of tho opinion that he had quite a sum of money in his possession, some estimating it as high as $7,000. The assassins were no doubt after tho money when their presence was discovered. None of it was secured, however. The murder created the most intense exci'oment in Folk county. Mr. Stubbs was a man of uoble qualitios, and universality esteemed Tho terrible manner of his taking off has fallen with a great shock on the community. Suspicion rests upon two men, oue from Dos Moines, and the other from the vicinity of Polk City. The town lias a well organized company of'vigllautes, who have done duty in emergencies before. They are out in force, and should they capture the mur-derors of tbo man, tbo State will be spared tho trouble of inflicting tbo penalty. Sheriff Littleton lias repaired to the sceue, and a squad of Des Moines police are also endeavoring to capture the scoundrelsJob Wise, John Swim and Charles Derickaon were arraigned at Folk City, charged with the murder. Two other men—H. C. Saunders and Joe Cox—were arrested at Dea Moines.
