Internet offering low-budget venue for hateThe belief among mostCalifornians has long been that this state’s best-known exponent of racial and religious hatred was passe, all but silenced,Tom Metzger, most thought, could never recover from the $123 million judgment assessed against him in 1990, when a jury found him responsible for inciting a gang of Skinheads to kilt an Ethiopian immigrant in Oregon.But that belief was wrong. Metzger, from Southern California, the onetime leader of the state Ku Klux Klan,has found new lifethrough the Internet.Like thousands of corporations and interest groups, Metzger ha* a web page. “This is a White Racist Web Page,” it recently proclaimed to cyber-surfers. “You are about to enter the White Aryan Resistance ... Hate £oom.”Metzger’s web site is among 14 Internet spots identified as blatantly racist or anti-Semitic by the Anti-Defamation League, whose reports on far-right militias tried to call attention to the threat they posed long before last year’s bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building.Another California-based page identified by the ADL is that of Greg Raven, an editor of the magazine regularly published by the Orange County-based Institute for Historical Review.While Metzger’s site offers blatant racism via articles from the primitive newsletter of his White Aryan Resistance, Raven’s work tries to masquerade as scholarship. One piece archived on Metzger’s web page is titled “My Favorite Jew, Jig and Pig,” It complains that “Even if most of our 180 million White Americans believes (sic) the majority of Jews, Spades, Latrinos (sic), Woggics and Gooks arc swinish threats to American traditions, virtually all have their favorite Jew, Jig, Pig, etc.”Metzger's page also features crude drawings portraying blacks, Jews and Latinos as vermin to be eradicated with bug spray.Far more sophisticated. Raven’s page is mostly aimed at the IHR’s longtime goal of debunking the Holocaust. In spite of many thousands of eyev. ilac^s accounts and the meticulous Nazi documentation preserved in the Berlin Document Center, Raven and the IHR consistently deny the wholesale murder of six million Jews ever took place.So his web site is replete with pseudo-scholarly articles bearing titles like “The Jewish Soap Myth” and “Auschwitz Myths and Facts.” Every article either denies or diminishes the Holocaust, raises Adolf Hitler to hero status or somehow tries to belittle Jews. Both the Metzger and Raven web sites have “hot links” to other, similar Internet locations, effectively creating an electronic hate network.The ADL complains that this is a perversion of technology, that the Internet effective ly allows bigots of many stripes to spread their message at almost no cost.That’s certainly true for Metzger, who lost; his home in the San Diego County city oftm CUAt, pap Ml
