Charges Unwarrantedmorning for more than five minutes can readilv attest to the factCharges have already beenftleveled against the police quelled Friday's disorder at Thornton Township high school, regarding their use of tear gas. Black parents have charged ttiat. the police only used tear gas on black students and white parents have charged that the police only gassed white students.Anyone who stood at the corner ot l.lnth and Broadwav Fridav °uthft-that the police were completelynon-discriminatory in lobbing tear gas grenades at both groups when they refused their orders to disperse. In fact, so much tear gas was used that everyone in a three-block area was eventually suffering from the tear-producing substance.The second charge raised wasthat the police used too much tear gas and innocent bystanders suffered as well as those in the groups.Tear gas, unfortunately blows withtin* wind and it did just that Friday. For those that think there was no need to use the gas. we recommend that they talk to Thornton Principal Robert llerget who was handed two armfuls of sticks, chains, fence stakes and other intended weapons after the confrontation.who()r, talk to the police officer who was hit over his protective helmet w ith a tire iron and talk to the blackin room 426 of Ingalls Memorial hospital w ho is in danger of losing the sight of one eye because of a rock thrown bv theseVgroups of troublemakers.t’ntil the tear gas was used, students refused police orders to clear the area around the high school so that students inside the building could be placed on buses and taken home safely.ftWe commend the restraint shown by the police from all communities who responded to this emergency. Without their show of force and trained response to a serious situation, the results would have been much more serious.
