W Clark, of Riverside, yesterday shot and probably fatally wounded Wirt Cheatham, general merchant of Cherry. Wirt countv, six miles j from Elizobeth and about four miles from Burning Springs. Daring Robery. inspired by the reading of dime novels led to the tragedy. Clark confessed after his arrest, saying that he had read “yellow backs’ * and that lie had started out to see what lie could do in the dcsparado line. He said he was after money.'Fhe shooting and the subsequent arrest of the youth, who is perhaps 1G years of ag,\ at the same time clears u; his niis-tcrious disappearance from this city Monday morning his father gave him a half dollar to get 'medicine at a drug store. Mr. Cheatham was hit in the head near the right cheek ] bone, and the bullett lodged j some place in the skull. According to later information the hul-| let had not been removed though surgeons had probed for i‘ in an J endeavor to remove it. It is j feared that the wound may prove fatal if there should be j complications.Following the shooting Mrs j Cheatham grappled with the i youth and succeeded in throwing him to the floor where for a few moments there was a desperate battle for possession of the weapon Young Clark made his escape finally and ran. At that time his identity was not known.A posse was organized and a search begun immediately, and nearby points were notified by phone. Sheriff Bumgarner, of Elizabeth, was notified and he sent out scourging parties.About noon young Clark was arrested by Wirt Thorn in the neighborhood of the crime. He was turned over to the authorities and during the afternoon was taken to Elizabeth. He isbeing held in the Wirt county jail awaiting developments.
