Newton County coroner rules homicide in Neely girl deathNewton County Coroner HenryFreund Monday night announced he had ruled homicide as cause in the death of Carolyn Sue Neely, 16, Joplin, formerly of Carthage, whose nude and partially decomposed body was found March 3 stuffed under an I abandoned outhouse on the old Boy Scout Camp southwest of Joplin.Freund’s findings were based on an autopsy. A coroner’s jury had been sworn in over the body March 4. However, Freund said that evidence gained from the autopsy was sufficient to decide cause of death as coming from a blow to the girl’s head whichfractured her skull. Time elapsed between death and when the body was found was estimated at about three months. The girl’s mother Mrs. Mary Neely, Joplin, reported her daughter missing Dec. 10, 1971. She told officers she had taken Carolyn, a sophomore, to Memorial High School on the previous day and that the girl had not returned. She never saw her daughter alive again.Newton County Sheriff Forrest Land said Monday there have been no arrests in the case but that his pffice is pursuing its investigation.
