County Jail Warden Beaten Foiling Attempted DeliveryTwo young men were charged with, aggravated assault and battery today after allegedly beating up Warden William Dirling during an unsuccessful attempt to break out of the Warren county jail Saturday night at 9 o'clock.Sheriff L. E. Linder preferred the charges against Robert L. Irwin, Jr., 22, of Girard, formerly of Warren, and a soldier, Clifford Barnes, 18, formerly of Toungsville. Irwin was being held in the county jail awaiting sentence on a charge of larceny of oil lease equipment, while the soldier was geing held for army authorities on a charge of being absent without leave from his army post.Lander said Warden Dirling went into the jail corridor to lock up the prisoners in their cells for the night. Irwin is reported to havfe* grabbed Dirling from behind, whileAmerican Mother ofYear Kentucky-BornNew York, April 25—(.*)— The American mother of the year is a tiny, 60-year-old Kentucky-born woman, the wife of a postal worker in Fort Worth, Tex.Mrs. Pearle Owens Gillis was named last night by the National Mothers Committee of the Golden Rule Foundation.Mrs. Gillis raised six children of her own, and helped educate eight others. The family she raised and helped educate now is engaged in many fields, including radio and college teaching.Mrs. Gillis will come to New York May 3 to attend an American Home Forum and be guest of honor at a reception.Don Gillis, production manager of the National Broadcasting Company, is one of her children. He called to his family not to unlock the door into the corridor, but to summon help from the State Police substation across the street.Both the State Police and Sheriff Lander responded to the call for help, and the two prisoners surrendered quietly upon their arrival.Linder laid the two prisoners apparently thought that the warden also carried the key to the corridor door when he entered the jail to lock up for the night.As a precaution against just such an occurrence, however, the warden enters the corridor and the door is locked behind him by a member of his family.Dirling suffered numerous abrasions and.a cut on the inside of his mouth, but did net require medical treatment.
