Seeing the Tri-Counties of Whitley, LaurelandKnox County, KyCorbin girlremainsBy SUSAN DAVISStaff WriterKentucky State Police are investigating the death of a local girl whose body was found in a four-wheel-drive vehicle near Corbin Sunday.Jennifer Lynn Nantz, 11, of Rte. 8, Corbin, apparently went riding with two Corbin men early Sunday about eight miles west of Corbin, officials said.Nantz’s grandfather, Pleas Mon-hollen, saia he and his wife last saw their granddaughter about 11 p.m. Saturday, when they went to bed. “Jennifer had gone to church and to Burger King to eat with Randy (her uncle) and then came back home. he said.She was watching television and talking on the telephone with a girlfriend when he and his wife decided to go to bed, Monhollen said.He said his son, Randy, was still up and didn’t go to bed until 1 a.m.Apparently two men stopped by, looking for his other son, Johnny. The three often played basketball together at his house, said Monhollen.“But Johnny was gone to his girlfriend’s house over in Laurel County, he said.Monhollen said Johnny got home about 2:45 a.m. and didn’t see his niece.When they discovered she wasn’t in bed the next morning, they thought their granddaughter hadApparently mother, Deborah Monhollen Nantz, thought she was still at her grandparents’ home, he said.“They live next door in a trailer,said Monhollen.He said he and his wife then went shopping Sunday morning.While they were gone, apparently the two men came to the house to get help. Johnny went back with them to help get the vehicle unstuck which was sitting in water and wouldn’t start, said Monhollen.When Johnny discovered his niece wasn’t asleep, but dead, he ran back to the house to get the rest of the family. “We all took off running down there, said Monhollen.State police were called at noon and Nantz was pronounced dead about 1:30 p.m. by Whitley County Deputy Coroner James Paul.The cause of death has not been determined and the body was sent for an autopsy which will be performed today at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.walked home. P11Sports Pages 10-11m i • • « -deathmysteryJENNIFER NANTZPound dead SundayPaul said there were no visible marks on the body which had been removed from the vehicle and was lying, fully clothed, on the ground when he arrived.Whitley County Coroner Carl Paul said the men, Eddie Ray Lan-ham, 22, and Kenny Smith, 21, said they had gone to the girl’s grandparents’ house about 2 a.m. to look for her uncle.The men said they and Nantz went for a ride to pass time until he got home, but the International Scout thev were driving got stuck in a mud hole on a dirt roaci in the forest, he said.The area is known as Granny’s Rock in the Barton Mill Road area, said Paul.The three decided to sleep in the vehicle until daylight and then goruing tlt; up aand walked out of the Daniel Boonef Kjfor help, according to Paul.The men woke ud about 10 a.m.National Forest to get help and thought the girl was still asleep, he said.Monhollen said his granddaughter had had a minor heart condition when she was bom, but had grown out of it. He said she was well and feeling fine when he last saw her Saturday.He described his granddaughter as an active girl and a basketball player. “She’d just brought home a trophy, he said.Nantz was a sixth grade student at East Elementary. Because of lack of space at the grade school, her class met in a room at Corbin Middle School.“Jennifer was a super student,said her teacher, Thelma Fields. “She made all As, had an extremely happy personality and was very outgoing. She was well-liked by her classmates. She loved horses.”Roger Marcum, principal at East Elementary, called Nantz a “very good student, an over-achiever and well-behaved.“Jennifer will be missed by her teachers and classmates,” he said.Marcum said two counselors with Cumberland River Comprehensive Care Center were called in and will be talking with her classmates today.No charges have been filed and Nantz’ death is being investigated by KSP Det. Carl Elliott. Assisting are KSP Troopers Earl Nicholson, Sam Durham, Lt. Ron Sears and U.S. Forest Service agent Paul Jemigan.
