Lynchings in U. S. Excced Foreign Actions(From the Junior Culh'ge Collegian, Los Angeles Junior College, Los Angeles, California)Americans rant and rave about Nazi cruelty, but forms cf persecution ex-ici: in the United SLaies that exceed anything the Gormans have yet, thought of. Jews have, it is true, born put into concentration camps, have been murdered, and have been beaten. We shudder as we read of a group of Nazi men knocking a young Jew down, kicking him until a chance kick knocks his eye out.But is this neatly as disturbing to one's rnentl slant as the action of lynch mobs in the United Stales? We read of mobs breaking into jails, seizing helpless prisoners and putting them to death onl? after revolting tortures. While men have tied Negroes by their feet and dragged them behind oars. On© Negro, guilty of r* crime against a white school teacher, was siezed, chained to the roof of the school house and slowly burned to death when the building was fired. Men, both black and white, have been actually torn apart while still living by mobs mad with fciood lust.And the ignorant, illiterate rabble! that make up a southern lynch mob are not the worst. Men alleged or | provrn to be eom munis Is, socialists or wobblies,” have time and again been mobbed, and by bis incss men, and members of respectable communities. Perhaps the most notahlo happeing of this sort was the killing of Wesley Ji versa I, a lumberjack who shot a member of a mob raiding the 1WW offices in Centralia, Wash. He was taken from the jail when all the city lights wore mysteriously turned off. Before being hanged from a bridge he was subjected to tortures, Next day the coroner called it suicide, treated it ae a huge joke. It was decided that he hanged himself from the bridge, pulled himself back up again to do the job over vith a longer rope, then ended it all with four or five shots.This is not a defense of Nazi policies, but a suggestion to any of our peaceful, pious eitisens who feel the need to protest the bestialities of other neonles. to review a little of
