Evidence to Thwart,M Justice.5i\The death of the Indian girl Ma-Sfca- m Che, an undoubted murder, is a topic much talked about in Tama county, where the reservation of tlxe tribe of which victim and accused are mein-X »■»*-3iters is located. It is the third violent] death in three years oi a resident of)! . the reservation, and the fact one otthe denizens of the distriet has been j | held ca the charge of • rnur-I der in this ease is an incident to at-;! tract much attention in. that coraman-! ify. in a review of the tragedy and j! subsequent developments the Traer Clipper of April 21 says;Guilt Seems Clear.Link by link federal authorities have welded a strong chain of evidenceagainst Soldier, a, chain that the defense cannot break, so they declare. That Soldier’s guilt will be clearly established and that he is destined to pay the penalty of it, is a declaration that has followed an investigation made by Deputy United States Marshall Healy- Indian evidence, upon which Soldier hopes to thwart justiceis as changeable as a weather vane, as was shown in the trial last year of Frank Earl, the slayer of Soldier’s brother, John Sepo, an Indian policeman. Federal authorities will depend almost entirely upon white evidence, that of farmers and business people,to send Soldier to the gallowg or the penitentiary.Soldier figured prominently in the prosecution of Frank Earl, and recognized the fact that the latter' escaped punishment for the crime by the questionable testimony of Indian witnesses. He now hopes to escape through the 5rtame loophole, not realizing that thefederal authorities have it blocked. Two Theories Advanced. Two theories are advanced to explain the cause of the. murder. One is jealousy On the part of Soldier. He married the girl when she was but thirteen and lived with, her several years, but the past two years they have been separated. Soldier again married, but had it seems never forgotten his former child wife. Often be had sought a reconciliation, but Ma-Sha-Che would not return to Mm. The -day of the murder they had beenunder the influence of liquor, and it is Thought Soldier induced the girl to take a walk with him, when he cruelly murdered her. The Star Clipper is informed by one of the Montour business men who stands near to the Indians that this is the theory generally believed and undoubtedly the true one. The other relates to the disaffection in the tribe over the office' of chief. Many of the Indians are opposed to Push-E-Tan-E-Qua and as the murdered girl is a grandchild the theory is that enemies of the chief put her out of - the way that there might be no danger of another heir being born, to inherit the chieftainship.Reputation is unsavory.ieorge Soldier is twenty-five years and bears an unsavory reputation, len drinking he is extremely brutal 1 it is believed had he let liquor ne on March 4 the murder would , have occurred. He is one of thest enlightened Indians of the tribe. ; father, Peter Soldier, to whom he ; appealed for aid, is a .veteran of : Civil, war. Some years ago he 1 his sons, George and John, arrest-for carrying whisky and testified linsfc them personally. -It is ex-meiy doubtful if he will extend ch assistance to George Soldier, ac-ied of murder.AH of Tragic Meaninge these lines from J- H.
