Heavy Cordon Is Thrown About Entire City by Police Force of Mason City and Sheriff and Deputies of Cerro Gordo County. It Is Believed That Fugitive From Justice Has Been Notified of Brother’s Death and Will Put Up Desperate Fight In His Efforts to Escape Capture. Inquest Over Leslie’s Remains Held Saturday Morning. Jury Finds Officers Sherrcd ar.d Liefson Battled to Save Own Lives.Mason City, Iowa, April 23 at 1:30 p. m.—The local police, sheriff and deputies of Cerro Gordo county have thrown a heavy cordon about the entire city today and an early capture of Norman Edwards, brother of Leslie Edwards, killed in gun battle with officers at Albert Lea Thursday night, is expected hourly. Norman was definitely sighted by neighbors hiding in brick yard just before noon. When observed he made a quick getaway. It is believed that he has been apprized of his brother’s death and will take desperate chances in his efforts to ward off his capture by the authorities. Excitement runs high in Mason City this afternoon. Hundreds of citizens have joined the search.The above telegram was received by the Tribune shortly before two o'clock. It is expected that a capture will be made before evening.The inquest over the remains, or dered by Coroner Webber and County Attorney J. O. Peterson, was held at ten o'clock Saturday morning at the Knatvold Undertaking parlors on So.' Broadway.The following jurymen were sworn In: Art Jenson. Albert Fedge. S. L.Benson, M H St. John, C. G. Swen-ning and A. E. Rodsater.Before the inquest the jury anti offi cers viewed the remains to learn the nature of the wounds.Dr. Folken, the attending physician, at the local hospital was sworn. He stated that it was the shot through the abdomen and liver that had caused the death of Leslie. “When he ask ed me if I thought he had a chance to live I told him he had a very slim one. He then told me that he had been in many scrapes around Owatonna and Albert Lea. ‘My brother Norman, started the shooting at the depot last night,’ is the reply he gave to my question as to who started the shooting.Miss Peterson, the nurse, who attended Leslie at the hospital, was sworn. She said that the testimony given by Dr. Folken was the same as she would give if the same quqes^ion were asked.Both Liefson and Sherrod were swot n and they gave practically the same story as told last night in the TribuneThe following was the verdict rend j ered by the jury“An Inquisition iaken at Albert Lea, | Minnesota, in toe County of Free-,born and State cf Minnesota, on the 23rd day of Apiil, 1921, before Paul \ Webber. Coroner of said County j of Freeborn, upon view of the body of Leslie Edwards, lying there dead, by the oaths of the jurors whose na ties are hereto subscribed, who being sworn to inquire on behalf of the State of Minnesota, when, how and by what means the said Leslie Ed wards, came to his death, upon their oaths say that the said Leslie Edwards, came to his death at the prem i ises known as Rock Island Railroad 1 Yards, Albert Lea, Minnesota on the I 21st day of April. 1921, his death being caused by the discharge of a loaded revolver by either William T. Sherrod or Theodore Liefson, in self defense, the said William T. Sherrod being a special agent of the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railway Company. and th»* said Theodore Liefson a police officer of the City of Albert Lea both of said men at the time performing their official duties as officers.In Testimony Whereof, the said coroner and jurors of this inquest have hereunto set their hands the day and year aforesaid.PAUL V. At times he took bis father’s place at the Mason City Brick Tile company.The funeral took place from the Knatvold undertaking parlors at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon.Forgot to Wire Mother.The following was received by the Tribune from Mason City, Iowa, at 4 o’clock Saturday afternoon:“Mrs. Edwards did not learn of the death of her son until Johnny Dickson, friend of the family and boyhood chum of Leslie, and who accompanied Edwards to Albert Lea Thursday night, returned to the city at 2 o’clock Friday. On leaving, her husband had said she would be notified if any thing was wrong. When he arrived, however, and found that Leslie was already dead he was so shocked he forgot his family.The members of the family were unusually composed today, one little girl, about 12 years, seemed to take the situation the most seriously. Her face was covered with tear stains.WhaJ do you suppose happened to Norman?” the father was asked.“I don’t know. We found his overcoat shot full of bullet boles, He may be dead somewhere. I'm afraid he crawled into a box car somewhere and bled to death. Then too he might * have fallen off the bridge into the river.”According to the father Leslie was a boy of a very quiet disposition. ’Leslie Edwards whose body was buried in Graceland cemetery at Albert Lea today, was born at Freeman.
