Sheriff Ffanks was in such close pursuit that Deputy Ellison who had left his auto and entered the field could not fire for fear of hitting the officer.When within two hundred and fifty yards of the negro he saw an opening and resting Ills pistol on his knee shot the negro in the calf of his other leg.This brought hhn to a halt but he took no notice of Sheriffff Franks' orders to drop his gun. Deputy Ellison came up and the negro fiqdiilg himself covered, held hlg gun by the harrell and delivered It but refused to drop it and throw up his hands.the officers took the gun they warned him that the slightest move on bis part meant death.Sheriff Franks Is lucky in escap- . ing without injury.
