ShootoutWith WellsvilleWELLSVILLE- A man identified as Lloyd Morris Jr., 27, of Wellsville, arrested last night on suspicion of burglary, ran from the police station . here last night and turned and fired at pursuing Deputy Sheriff Tom Whyte, Coroner Alex Gardner said today.“As soon as he fired at the officer, I started shooting at him,'’ Police Chief John Whyte said. The deputy is his brother.; The Montgomery County coroner .said Morris’s body was found on the west side of the railroad tracks on Krekel Street, some distance from the police station in city hall, at First and Hudson (Highway19).He was shot in the side of the head, the coroner said. He directed Audrain Medical Center pathologist Dr. JohnBoyce to conduct an autopsy to determine if Morris shot himself or if he was hit by a policeman's bullet.Three shots were fired from Morris’s .32 revolver, the coroner said. Police Chief John Whyte fired five times with his .38 calibre police • revolver.According to Police Chief Whyte the deputy sheriff and Prosecuting Agtorney James Gregory, who was in Jefferson City this morning, were in Wellsville to question Morris about a county case. Also present in the city hall .were two other Wellsville officers, Richard Nation and James Gannaway. Another deputy arrived shortly after the shooting, which apparently occurred about 10:43, according to the coroner.Coroner Gardner was calledat 11: IS and reached the scene at 11:35. He Bald he has not called a coroner’s jury and whether an inquest is held will depend on the autopsy findings.Mr. Morris, a Negro, was employed as a farm worker by Roy Popp of Benton City. Heand his wife and their daughter live in Wellsville, as do his parents.His younger brother, Alton Morris, 15, also has been working for Mr. Popp, who said the boy formerly had been at the Missouri Training School in Boonvllle and is in (custody of a juvenile parole officer, William G. Barnhill, of the St Louis area. The boy had reported he had been in custody last night and was beaten, according to Mr. Popp, who said the boy appeared bruised.
