UNSUCCESSFUL AlTEMPIHade to Rob the Deputy State BaskBelieved Robbers Were Frightened Away After Breaking Outer Doorof Vault.An unsuccessful attempt was made some time last night to rob the Deputy State Bank, in Graham township, about 20 miles west of Madison. The combination knob of the outer door of the vault was broken off and it is believed the robbers were frightened away after doing this damage.The attempted robbery was not discovered until about 8 o’clock this morning when Mr. Frank Anderson, Cashier at the bank, went to the building to get ready for the day’s business. He found the door of the bank building open and the window blinds, drawn from the bottom, were up. Upon entering the building Mr. Anderson immediately noticed the door leading to the vault had been tampered with. Heat once telephoned Sheriff George A. Monroe, who drove to Deputy and made a complete investigation. In the meantime a crowd of men had gathered at the bank and when the Sheriff arrived he found a number of tools in the bank building that had been taken by the would-be robbers from a blacksmith shop atDeputy, but outside of this nothing was found that would throw any light on the attempted burglary.People living in Deputy heard an automobile between 1 and 2 o’clock this morning that disturbed the usual quiet of the village and it was later learned an automobile, presumably the same one heard at Deputy, was heard to pass through Lexington and afterwards Crothersville.a he combination of the lock on the vault door has been destroyed and oank officials this- morning sent to Indianapolis for an expert to open the vault.The breaking cf the combination lock is thought to be the only damage done by the robbers, who are not believed to be professionals.
