IMystery Clouds Slaying of Banker As Doubt Arises as Whether He Was Shot by Bandit or Personal EnemyNo Eye-Witnesses to Crime Complicates Solution ofKilling of H. M. Saylor at South Vienna.Springfield, O., April 21.— Authorities raised the question today of whether II. M. Saylor, 57, a bank official of South Vienna, near here, was fatally shot by a holdup man or an assailant with some other motive. There were no actual witnesses present yesterday when Saylor, a former editor of Farm and Fireside, was shot down in the cage of The Farmers Deposit bank, of which he was president and cashier.iHe had held the latter post for nearly a quarter of a century.Sheriff George W. Benham said he had not decided whether Saylor was killed by a holdup man who escaped with no loot, or had been the victim of a man reported to have been watching Saylor’s moves for several days. The verdict will be homicide, said Coroner Austin Richards after a four-hour autopsy. Richards!added he was unwilling to say if it had occurred during a holdup.ILewis Jones, bookkeeper for the bank in the small village of 400, said he returned to the bank from lunch in time to hear the shot which killed Saylor. After running down the street to spread an alarm, Jones returned with several other citizens to find Saylor’s body. A single bullet through the head, had caused his death.Saylor’s own revolver was untouched.Sheriff Benham said M. H. Davey gave him a description of a man who walked out of the bank about the time of the shooting, stepped into an automobile and drove away. The description w*as similar, the sheriff said, to that of a stranger seen for several days about the village.
