POLICE ARREST THREE j , FOR ROBBERY OF SAFEOfficers Say They Confess to Tak lng Strong Box from Express Office HerePersistent work on the part of Patrolman Frank Fitzgerald of the local! police and Chief of Detectives Hurricane and Special Offieer Weaver, of the Washington agency of the Ameri-' can railway expiess company resulted •in the arrest yesterday afternoon and last night of three colored men who* the officers say confessed to the stealing and robbery of a safe from the local express office last Friday. All three men are being held in heavy j bonds for action by the grand 'Jury. lt;* The contents of the safe, mostly checks and orders, was destroyed by the men with the exception of $48S in money. The safe contained, besides the cash, $1,740’ in miscellaneous checks, $375 in supreme court orders and $6,000 in express company or-j ders. These checks and orders were for the most part destroyed and cast 'away, some into sewers, some into, j trash piles and elsewhere.! In their alleged confession the!| three men, Percy Turner, Homer Rob-; erts and Sylvester Redmon, admitstaking the safe, which weighed about) j 200 pounds, from the express com-. pny’s office at the Kanawha and Michigan depot. They took the safe to' Turner’s cabin, they stated, where they beat the door open and after rifling it of its contests, took the * »empty safe to a junk yard in Hansford street. They left it, where it was | discovered the day after the robbery.Patrolman Fitzgerald with the express detectives, has been working since the robbery and suspicion led to the arrest of the three men. Turner ; was found at his home in Hansford [street, Roberts at the Brown hotel ) and Redmon was picked up at Dickin-?son and Washington streets by the of-i fleer. The confession made by the men I was a written one and is held by the ! local police.
