Her car was nearby and her watch was found in his van, alongthose that handcuffs would make, police said.Based on physical evidence and witness statements, Sheriff Lt. Richard Olson said Steven Walters, 30, is a prime suspect in the strangulation of Lori Calhoun, 41, of Long Beach, whose body was found early March 21 behind a Laguna Hills business.Officers are attempting to locateseveral other women whose credit cards were found in the forklift mechanic’s residence, but Olson stopped short of saying Walters is a suspect in any other cases.Specifically, Lt. Frank Merri-man of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday that Walters “has not been eliminated’’ as a suspect in the slaying of a Cypress girl found strangled March 19 near a flood-control channel less than two milesfrom Walters’ home.Zuleima Valdez, 16, was last seen leaving her mobile home at 9:30 p.m. March 18.Several factors have prompted investigators to probe whether the two slayings are related. Both victims were strangled and found within a short time of each other.Calhoun’s body was identified by a fingerprint check. Investigators contacted a friend who said the woman had found a room to rent on215th Street in Lakewood.Later on March 21, detectives went to that address, which was Walters’ residence, in the 11700 block of 215th Street, after friends who saw her last said that was where she was going.Walters did not answer the door, but answered his phone when deputies called him from their car. He apparently then shot himself to death with a .38-caliber handgun.Calhoun’s identification cards“The investigation is continuing,” Olson said. “Attempts are being made to contact the female • owners of the several credit cards that were found in Walters’ house and garage. However, (investigators) have been unable to find any of the women at this time.” He said ; there were no indications any of‘ the women had been victims of foul1 play. 1 '
