Reedreceives maximum sentence in murderBy SUSAN BLEZNICKHuron County Bureau NORWALK - Larry Reed,18, was sentenced Tuesday afternoon to 15 years to life in prison for murdering 21-year-old Judith Skiver of Norwalk March 10 at Memorial Lake Park. He pleaded guilty to the murder Friday.Huron County Common Pleas Court Judge Robert Smith sentenced Reed in a five-minute procedure. A murder sentence is mandated by law, so there is no question regarding the penalty it carries.About 20 spectators sat in the courtroom, all of whom were subjected to a body search before entering. A few persons watched the procedure with tears in their eyes.Public Defender Russell Leffl-er, speaking on behalf of Reed and the young man’s parents, said, “They feel very bad and remorseful over the entire thing.” Reed looked down while Leffler spoke.Janet Estep, mother of the murder victim, told Smith, “He (Reed) should have to serve his full sentence with no type of parole.”Reed may be eligible for release from prison after lOVfe years if he qualifies for good behavior and earned credits (for school). The parole board will decide whether Reed serves the full sentence.Before serving time on the murder, Reed faces a mandatory three-year sentence for carrying a gun during the commission — so he possibly could be released in 13Ms years, Leffler said.“I know that what I did I’m going to have to live with for the rest of my life,” Reed said quietly in the courtroom. Sentencing is not half as bad as the feelings I’m going to have to live with, he added.“That’s a helluva sentence to swallow when you're 18 years old,” Leffler said, adding, “He’s (Reed) more in shock than anything else.”Prior to pleading guilty, Reed was charged with aggravated murder and aggravated robbery. By pleading guilty to a reduced charge of murder, Reed avoided a possible death sentence The penalty range for an aggravated murder conviction is life in prison or death.Reed is ineligible for probation and waived his right to indictment when he pleaded guilty.
