VOLUME 85-NO. 30WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19, 1972 HARHarvard WinsSweepstakes ForSecond YearThe music department of Harvard High School journeyed to Sycamore on Saturday, April 15, to particpate in the state music contest for organizations. There were over 2,000 students from 38 schools of varying sizes (Class AA down to Class D) competing in this contest. Harvard's music department returned as the state winner ofthe Sweepstakes for all schools in Area V. This was accomplished by totalling the number of points received for ratings at solo and ensemble contest on February 25 in Sycamore and those received on Saturday for the organizations’ ratings. The points which could .be accumulated were:Div. I Div. IIBandMixed Chorus Girls* Chorus Boys” Chorus SolosEnsembles201020101681682163Harvard (Class B) won the Sweepstakes with a total of 271 points and Rockford Harlem (Class AA) was the runner-upwith 181 points.The Choral Department, under the direction of Sharon Keene, received all superiorratings for both performance and sightreading from judges Alice Beming, R. A. Guenzler, Gordon Olson, and Harold Livingston (sightreading). The Girls’ Glee Club, a robed choir of 66 voices, sang two selections : 0 Come Let Us Sing Unto The Lord by Kent Newbury and Evensong by Houston Bright. Some of the judges’ comments were: “Well disciplined,musical group,” “I’m impressed with the music program at Harvard -good work-large groups tremendous!” “It is an obvious fact you love to sing and are doing beautiful music, musically.”The Boys’ Glee was a robed choir of 31 voices which sang Praise Ye The Lord by Saint Saens and Roadways by Will James. Judges’ comments were: “Pleasing sound — remarkable for high school boys,” “Thanks for havingthem sing . . Boys’ choirs are great.” “A real treat -bravo!(Continued on page 3)The Sweepstakes AwardProud they are! and Proud they should be!
