The Civii Court was opened on Tuesday last by the Hon. Mr. Justice Jones. Nearly two t hundred onuses were entered for trial. lt;■On Wednesday a very interesting action was tried—Mr. Armour of Cobourg, plaintiff, and the lion. Walter Boswell, the lion. Zaccheus Burnham, Mr. Henry and Mr Falkner, Newcastle District Magistrates, defendants, for false iinpris- s onment. The case had been twice tried at Co- s bourg, the first verdict gave the plaintiff £250 —the second £175, both were set aside, and the ( Court granted an application by the defendants lt;to try the case in this District from the alleged prejudice of jurors. 1Mr. Sherwood opened the case in a very elo- ] quent spoech—evidence was given of the nia- t gistrates committing Mr. Armour and his being put in the cells of the jail. He had been brought before them on some charge of being engaged in some n'ght-tpree of the young bloods of Cobourg —on reading the depositions against him, he threw them from him with contempt, and, as some of the witnesses proved, ef the Magistrates on the Bench—for which they committedhim.The Attorney General and Mr. II. J. Boulton •appeared for the defence, and the former gentleman addressed the Jury for Jhe defendants in one of the most powerful, eloquent, and convincing -speeches we have ever heard delivered in a Canadian Court ef Justice. We wish uirich that ■ the knocker-twisters, sign-reraovers, and other •JouJ night-birds of this City had heard the bitter castigation which the learned Attorney General gave their miserable fraternity. We think that this part of his speech might to be printed as a small tract, to be distributed gratis for the espe--cial benefit cl' “night-birds.” Mr. Baldwin in a highly amusing and happy speech replied for the plaintiff. The learned Judge summed up ill a .dear and forcible manner, strongly against the plaintiff.
