Venued Here From Union County RecentlyABE GRIFFIN ACCUSEDThe case of the Stale against Abe Griffin, venued here l'rom Union county, was scheduled for beginning in the Circuit Court this morning. But so many witnesses arrived late that the first of the evidence did not come to light until this afternoon.The case is very little known in Fayette county. A jury was selected without much trouble ami sworn in toward eleven o'clock. Then adjournment until one o’clock was taken.Griffin is charged with criminality,the foundation of the charge beingthe age of the prosecuting witness,Bessie Stetzer, of near Liberty. Sheis now about sixteen years old.There is a child and the present casehas in it all the elements of a paternity suit. Broadly it is one of the most pathetic cases to be brought to trial in the Fayette court for years.The defendant is thirty years of age. He has been in jail several months and is lean from confinement. He formerly was a Cincinnati street car conductor, and was in a strike there less than two years ago. Soon after the strike, due to spitework, he alleges, he was in the Cincinnati courts, charged with a statutory offense, and served a workhouse term. He was bom in the heart of one of the most notorious feudist districts of Kentucky and many of the older men of his family met violent death at the hands of hostile neighbors. Grinin's general appearance is distinctly that of a gentleman. He declares the charge now lying against him is sheer fiction. It is hinted that the evidence may bring up sensations of unprintable kind.The father of the girl, Reuben Stetzer, was the first witness and his testimony was merely starting at midafternoon.
