April IS. ~ Thomas Murrell, one of the most prominent and wealthy farmers of Cooke county, was assassinated yesterday morning at 8:80 o’clock by Jack Crews, one of his tenants. Murrell went to the barn to feed his stock. When he entered the barn door two bullets pierced his body in the region of the heart. Mrs. Murrell upon hearing the shots went to the rescue of her husband. When she reached his side a bullet from a Winchester pierced her neck, killing her instantly. Crews then came down from the hay loft where he had been secreted all night and rilled Murrell's pocket of #100. Then taking one of the best horses in the barn, rode to another farm, six miles distant, where a son, Morgan Murrell, aged 28, was plowing corn. \\ ithout a word of warning he. too, was ! shot, the bullet taking effect in the : heart, causing instant death, t rews then started on to the farmhouse to kill Leonard, another son, but he could not be found. trews then crossed Red river and is now hiding in heavy thickets. Thomas Murrell lived one hour after he was shot He made a statement in w hich he said he recognized .lack Crews as his murderer and detailed the shooting of himselfand wife. Immediately after thetragedy an armed posse of fifty farmers organized and started in pursuit. By noon the posse had greatly increased until now fully 600 men are on his Call. Sheriff Ware and five deputies are but five hours behind Crews. If apprehended he will undoubtedly tie lynched. Never in the history of Cooke county has excitement run so high The trouble is said to have been the result of a quarrel between Crews and Morgan Murrell last Saturday, which resulted In Thos. Murrell rescinding the crop contract between Crews and himself. The latter came to this city Wed nos-day and purchased a Winchester. Thomas Murrell is a brother to Hon.J. C. Murrell of this city, who was a member of the last legislature, and who offers a reward of $800 for Crows' arrest. At H o’clock last night Sheriff Ware returned from thepursuit of Crews and telegraphed to all sheriffs and constables in the Indian Territory and Texas to Iks onwthe lookout. Ho offers a reward of |olt;m» for Crews arrest. This makes a total of HI, Crews is about 40 years of age, w'eighs 150 pounds, sandy whiskers and mustache, whiskers worn high up on face and very short, his complexion is swarthy, height about 5 feet b or 7 inches. He is slightly stoop-shouldered. Ho wore a white slouch hat when last seen and was riding u dark bay or light brown horse with a shoe on the left forefoot. He was armed w ith u 4 i-caliber Winchester and a 41-Colt's pistol. He is a dangerous man and aline shot.
