GEO. SOLDIERUNDER ARRESTIS BEING HELD PENDING PROBE INTO INDIAN GIRL'S DEATH.INQUEST WAS SECRETBODY WILL BE EXHUMED AND AU-TOPSY MADE.Witnci»e* Wiil Be Hard to Find— Third Murder on Reservation—State Newt.fTama, April 17.—As the result of the discovery of the body of Nellie Ma-Sha-Che, or the Indian, belle who disap- 1 peared so mysteriously last March, George Soldier has beeu arrested and the coroner of the county is now holding a secret inquest. At the suggestion of Deputy Marshal M. Healy of Cedar Rapids, this was done. All the evidence introduced causa mortis was that of Dr. Corns of Montour, who .made a partial examination of theibodv. Dr. Corns stated that there were indications that the woman came to her death by a blow on the head, but not sufficient for him to be positive that this was the cause of death. The body will probably be exhumed and a careful autopsy made.• There is one. peculiar circumstance about the death of this woman, which, if carefully investigated, may throw some light upon her death. About two years ago an Indian by the name of , John Sepo was murdered at the reser-' yation. One Frank Earl was arrested and indicted by the federal grand jury. The evidence seemed to be positive that he was the guilty party, but when the trial came on those who testified before the grand jury seemed to know nothing ,in the trial court. It is a known fact that the Indians have but little respect or regard for their oath in our civil and criminal courts, bilt they have a way of their own in meeting out retribution. This John Seepo was the brother of George Soldier, the accused: in this case. The death of this woman may be traceable back to some connection of hers with the Sepo murder. There is a belief that if the detec: fives take up this line of thought good may result- George Soldier is the son1 of Peter Soldier, who is a half breed, he claiming that his father was a German teamster connected with the regular army, ,VA large number of Indians were in‘the city Saturday holding, quiet talks among themselves,-but it is claimed that the material witnesses are hard-to find. If this woman was murdered it will be the third ease of that kind-occurring oh the reservation within the last decade and so far. none of -the guilty parties have been punished.
