Sheriff's deputy slammed against wall during melee By Natalie Phillips Gazette Telegraph An El Paso County sheriff's deputy was knocked unconscious Monday when an inmate slammed him up against a wall in a fit of anger during an escape attempt The deputy, Joseph Behrman, was treated at Memorial Hospi tal for head injuries and re leased Michael A. Burke, 23, of Colo rado Springs, apparently came out of a second-floor court room in the judicial building after an appearance on a felony advise ment proceeding for an arrest Saturday night screaming, ‘'I was set up; I’m not going to jail, I hate the police,'’ according to Tim Carbo, a court bailiff and witness to the incident. Burke allegedly slammed Behrman against the wall, knocking him unconscious, as Behrman attempted to handcuff him. He then knocked another officer against the wall before Carbo, Judge Douglas Anderson and other courthouse personnel were able to tackle him. Carbo, who had blood stains on his shirt sleeve from a bloody nose Burke received in the scuf fle, said, ‘‘I thought—he (Behrman) was dead.’’ Burke ‘‘just picked him up and chucked him.” “The guy had super-human strength. He was flinging every one around,”’ Carbo said. ‘I ran down the hall and Judge An derson heard it and came run ning.” Carbo said it took nine men to subdue Burke. Anderson, who was also blood stained, said he ‘‘tried to calm him down. I told him his lawyer was a good lawyer. Burke was released on parole on Jan. 4 from the Fremont Correctional Facility where he was being held on escape charges. He was arrested Saturday af ternoon by El Paso County sher iff's officers for first-degree criminal trespass and parole vi olations. He was picked up near his home in the 1100 block of Valley Manor Court. Once Burke was subdued, he was put in a holding cell on the second floor of the courthouse where he remained for the rest of the afternoon. He was trans ported back to the jail Monday evening. Sheriff Bernard Barry said charges would be filed today against Burke.
