8 Ohio MinersICOLUMBUS, O., April 13 WV-A special federal grand jury, acting the government's third major prosecution under the Smith-Connally labor dispute act, today indicted eight Belmont-co men oncharges of “urging, inducing or. coercing a strike in plants or mines in possession of the United States.4The strike, involving 800 men, occurred Dec. 18, 1943 at two Ohio mines of the M. A, Hanna Coal Company, then in possession of the government. The labor stoppage grew out of the protests of mechanics at the mines against being laid off in the middle of the week and required towork on Sunday.The protesting workers at Piney Pork Mine No. 1 at Piney Fork, and the Dun Glen mine at Dun Glen, Ohio, contended that under the contract with the government they were entitled to work six consecutive days. Biddle said that at the time the miners struck, the issue was under negotiation between the United Mine Workers and the government and was decided in favor of the miners in January.While the issue involved minemechanics throughout theUnited States, Piney Fork and Dun Gien were the only places where(Turn to Page 10—No. 1.)
