DePriest Wins League Meet at Colorado CityThe Hamlin DePriest School entered the District 1-A Inter-scholastic League meet Saturday which was held at Colorado City. DePriest won the literary events with 55 points with the following contestants placing first; Junior spelling, Alice Faye Ervine and Roberta Douglas; Junior declaiming,Bernice Cork; Debating, Estelle Willis and Walter Levant j Franklin.One second place winner wasWayne Brown in storytelling.Third place winners were sub-junior spelling, Dorothy Butler and Peggy Covington; senior declaiming, Jack Breedlove; sub-junior declaiming,Debra Sue Lee; one-act play.Number sense contestants placed fourth and fifth.The girls track team won four out of five events. The events placed first in wrere 50 yd. dash; 200 yd. relay; 440 relay and basketball throw\VGirls participating were MaeEllon Bolden, Louise Bolden, Bet t ve Johnson. Joanne Johnson and Gillis Nell Paige.Boys’ track team placed fourth with 26% points. Colorado City won the meet with30 points.James Waller placed first in high jumping with a leap of 5’9”. Boys’ track team was made up of Hardy Lee Nabors,James Waller, Dan Miller, Jack Breedlove, Raymond P. Johnson, Benny Johnson, Charles Titus, Robert D. Davis andWilly Hunter.The schools making up district 1-A are Sweetwater, Colorado City, Slaton, Plainview, Vernon, Lamesa and Hamlin.
