Cose Ruling AwaitedSALT LAKE CITY (UPI) -Two Civil Service Commission members listened to testimony about fired Salt Lake City policeman Richard Childs’ drunken driving arrest, then said they would rule later on itsadmissibility at his appeal hearing.Commissioners Milon Mars-den Jr. and Harold Simpson permitted City Attorney Roger Gitler to present the evidence about the arrest, which occurred a month after the shooting incident that led to Childs’dismissal.Childs was fired Feb. 19 for various incidents of misconduct, including problems related to alcohol. But his dismissal basically stemmed from the fatal shooting last Nov. 18 of Joe Oliver Herrera during a brawl on a downtown sidewalk.Several witnesses who saw the shooting testified Thursday on the second day of Childs’ appeal hearing that they saw Herrera threatening the off-duty officer with a knife.Officer Bruce Jacobsen, whowas the first policeman to seeChilds after the shooting, said the officer appeared to ‘slump when walking to the patrol car, like he was in shock.’’I don't think he was drunk, but I could smell alcohol ’’Jacobsen.
