2d in 4 months$500G blaze hits Squire shop centerBy ED KLEINVAILS GATEVails Gate Fire Company led 175 men from three fire departments in fighting a seven-hour blaze that swept through New Windsor's Squire Village Shopping Plaza early Monday morning.Two firemen were injured and heavy damage—estimated at $500,000-was reported to six stores in the modern shopping complex.State and town police, in addition to fire underwriters, will probe this second major fire to sweep the plaza within four months, and the ninth to involve Squire Village properties.The latest fire, still of undetermined origin, raged out of control at 3:10 a.m„ centering its intensity at the rear of Squire Lounge.Vaiis Gate responded with all its equipment and recruited Quassaick and Highland Engine Companies as reinforcements.Mountainville and Highland Mills Fire Companies were ordered to stand by.Heavy smoke hindered the firefighters' initial efforts to set into the burning complex as the blaze spread.New Windsor Volunteer Ambulance stood by with two emergency vehicles that swept injured firemen off to St. Luke’s Hospital, Newburgh.Vails Gate Fire Lt. Kenneth Noyes was hit in the eyes with flying objects as he crossed the roof of a burning building. He was brought down and treated at the hospital.Asst. Chief Sidney Weinheim, injured fighting another fire at town-houses being developed by Squire Village personnel, again was sentto the hospital when a nail punctured his heavy boot and imbedded itself in his foot,Weinheim previously had fallen through a floor at the abandoned Thomas mansion on Blooming Grove Turnpike while fighting the fourth suspicious fire to strike the structure. The Thomas building is owned by Squire Village, Inc,Weinheim, after being treated for his injured foot, went back to the Squire Haza blaze.The fire crawled through the upper beam work of the complex, reports stated, and was virtually unaffected by sprinkler systems that gushed below. The fire ate through the roofs of the stores while gutting their interiors.Totally destroyed by the fire were the Squire Village Pharmacy, the Squire Lounge, and Squire Luncheonette.As one crew of firemen fought to bring the blaze under control, another, with the assistance of Newburgh town police, emptied Economy Cleaners of all garments. No clothes were reported lost or damaged, owner Philip Snyder said, but all would have to be reprocessed to erase the smell of smoke.He credited fast firemanic work for saving an estimated 1, garments. Snyder said he expects that the shop will be open again Wednesday.Also suffering smoke and water damage were Tauber's Bakery, The House of Elegance, a beauty parlor, and A P.Firemen, by using a battery of smoke extractors, prevented any damage to food at A P. Hie store opened as usual this morning.Smoke and water damage was also reported to the offices of the Weight Watcher’s Club, located over Squire Lounge; Dr. Jerome Wittner, a chiropractor; and Howard Garfinkle, Squire Village executive.Two other offices, one run by the Department of Interior and one by Charles Morgan, a jeweler, were also damaged by smoke and water.HU
