FARMER TAKES HIS OWN LIFEtespondency Blamed for Herman Gieselman Suicide in FieldHerman H. Gieselman. 54, farmer living south of Burlington onU. S. highway 61, committed suicide shooting himself in the left side w ith a shotgun late yesterday afternoon in a field west of “thef(- ks“ of Madison road and Route61. jDespondency over finances was blamed for his act bv Coroner R.mO. Giles. Officials said a note left by the man and turned over to hisfamily, indicated he had been despondent for some time.Alive When Found.Mr. Gieselman was alive whenseen lying in the field by Bernard Nelson, Ft. Madison, Iowa fvfate penitentiary official, who is believed to have discovered the man Immediately after the shooting. Mr. Nelson was driving toward Ft. Madison. Cliff Smith, 118 S. Marshall street, stopped immediatelyafter the discovery.Nelson telephoned Burlington police, who in turn notified the sheriffs office. Deputy Sheriff Ed Johnson and State Highway Patrolman Harvey Strater sped to the scene, finding the farmer alive but not fully conscious. They sent for the police department ambulance. and Capt. R. E. Goodman and Patrolman Dick Wiesel went to the filed, but the man was dead when they arrived.
