WING to the fuclemeucy ofthe weather since the first ofMarch, influenza and severecolds have been prevalent. Many of the old people are stricken down, and it is feared a few will succumb to the weakness of old age. No iufectious epidemic, however, has reached us as yet, although we hear rumors of diphtheria and such like raging iu the lumber woods.AN old and respected Fogoite passed away to-day in the person of Mr. Thomas Layman, a cooper by trade, who, for many years, had given the greatest satisfaction to all tirnis who have cjkployed him, and he has gone to the u great beyond ” honored and respected by all to whom he was known.’ He teaves a wife and large family to mourn their sad Io9g.He was a Third Degree member of the Order of United Fishermen, and doubtless they will parade at his funeral.MR. PETER PICKETT, another old and respected Fogoite, is also at the point of death, and poor hope is entertained of his complete recovery. We sincerely hope, however, that “ Skipper Peter ” will survive this attack, as he will be keenly missed by all his friends, lie is nearly ninety years of age, and upto lately has been quite hale uud hearty.A RARE occurrence took place not long ago in Island Harbor. It was the death of a woman called Mrs. Simms, at the extreme old age of 100 years!OUR mailmen have done good work this winter. They have had some unprecedented ly bad travelling, but have overcome all obstacles and bid fair to beat all records.THE ice in the harbor has been in bad condition all the winter, and one young man had a narrow escape from drowning.OUR fishermen are busily engaged at their usual work, viz.: that of building boats and houses, and repairing their traps and nets, and also hauling wood from the country. We hope that a good cod fishery will attend them this year, as it is badly needed to make things hum. Spring after spring passes and we get no seals, so that codfish has become our chief mainstay and support.A PLEASING improvement has been made in the changing of the name of that old and loyal settlement, Joe Batt’s Arm, to that of 41 Queenstown.” We arc informed that it was mainly bv the energetic efforts made by Mr. William Furze, a trader of Jackson Sc Co.’s employ, that the change of name has been accomplished. At the time the petitioners affixed their signatures to the petition, they were not aware of the serious illness of our late beloved sovereign, and the new name did not imply any significance regarding her.WHEN the news of her death, however, came with such a suddan shock to the loyal Queenstowners, as it did to the whole of the British Empire, it is needless to say that they regarded their new name with a far deeepcr feeling than before; and what better tribute could they pay to Victoria the Good?IT is to he hoped that other places with antiquated names, like that of Joe Butt's Arm, will follow the example of tlie Queenstowners.ONE of those periodical scandals thal never seem to miss Fogo, has cropped ujamong us again. We refer to the magistracy petitions, which have been the general topic of conversation in Fogi this winter. We cannot help deploring that such a sordid, mercenary spirit pro vails among our social classes, and there is no doubt hut that it affects the gen-eial prosperity and elevation of our littlecommunity.WE sincerely hope that the Government will treat the matter with a firmand discriminating hand, as the wholeaffair is materially wong, and however unjustifiable, Magistral Malcolm's occupation of office may !fe, it is considered that the means which were resorted to for his dismissal have been marked by extreme baseness and unscrupulousness ou the part of the instigators.KITCHENER.Fogo, March 26th, 1901.— — i wmA PIPE AND A CUE.—A billiard one and a pipe were presented to the successful bllliardists by Mr. Farrell, chairman of the 8Um* Reading Room comuHt-fcec. Mr. L. Byrne was Che recipient of $be.forn*er, aud Mr. Maher of the latter, 9*fre wou sceoud nlace.
