Lehmberg wins district attorney runoffBy Katy JusticeDaily Texan Staff Tears of joy ran down Rosemary Lehmberg's face as she hugged supporters, friends and co-workers at her runoff election watch party at Joe's Bar and Grill Tuesday night.Lehmberg won 65 percent of the vote against her opponent, Mindy Montford, and will succeed Ronald Earle, who has served as Travis County district attorney since 1976. Lehmberg will take office on January 1.Like the cowboy said to the rodeo rider, take a deep seat and get a faraway look in your eyes, Earle advised Lehmberg at the watch party. Other Austin public faces, including former opponent GaryCobb and city council candidate Randi Shade, also attended the watch party.Right after the runoff results were announced, Montford called Lehmberg to wish her well as the new district attorney. Lehmberg said the two will continue to be friends.Lehmberg said she spent thelast month after the primary election getting her supporters back to the polls and reminding people about the runoff election. She now says she wants to catch her breath, see her parents, play with her puppy at the beach and then get back to work.Sitting down with Earle to discuss ideas and share new plansand finding a qualified first assistant are Lehmberg's first priorities, she said.I am so relieved I get to leave this community in such good hands, Earle said.Lehmberg said during her campaign that her initiatives are to keep Austin a safe city, step up environmental prosecutions, workon alternate diversion programs for first-time drug offenders and provide effective prosecution of online crimes.It's about experience, a record of leadership and hearing what people are saying, Lehmberg said. It's been a great campaign, we have a great office, and we are going back to work.
