M., WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9,1879.NO. 17.IyfQCJAl J, DOLAS,This gentleman is out In a I letter replying to an articlein Thirty-Four of March 19.We had hoped that the next time Mr. Dolan should appear in print he would give the pul-lic some facts upon which to found a judgment of the real situation in Lincoln and enable it to fix llie responsibility lor Chapman’s murder where it belongs. This hope has been disappointed; and after read-1 ing this last letter one is unable to arrive at any conclusion in the matter, except that Mr. Dolan stands accused and denies the accusation.By reference to the editorial to which he alludes, Mr. Dolan will find that it was not, as he states, a comment “on a letter addressed by me to the editors of said paper,” but on a letter addressed by him to a gentleman of tliis town, which was handed to us for publication and which closes with a request that it should be made public. I Lis letter to the editors of this paper arrived after that editorial was in type and, as we stated, contained nothing calling for any qualification of the remarks contained in our comment. We publisned the second letter as received, for the reason that we did not feel disposed to assume the responsibility of writing a “card” for Mr. Dolan and signing his name to it. Mis friends here with whom we consulted thought with us, that the publication of the letter would answer the pur xwe of such a “card,” while re iev-ing us from the possible charge of having published over his signature a “card” w h i e h might not contain exactly such a statement as he had desired to make. It would have been just as easy to have written the “card” as the letter. Then why did lie not do so instead of asking us to do it for him? Two other papers of the Territory published “cards” from him which were almost identical in their phraseology, showing that they were written by the same person, and as they both appeared on the same day and are located in towns 300 miles apart there couldhave been no understanding [between the publishers as tothe wording of their respective ‘‘cards” If, then, he could furnish “copy” to other journals, why not to this? Besides, his letter certainly served eve-ry purpose, and weave at a loss to understand why he objects to its uiblieatiou. lie appears to be aboring under the impression that Tuihty-Fouk isendeavoring to prejudice the public mind against him. In this lie is mistaken, and we believe n o fair-minded a n d disinterested person will agree with him.If his letters arc not intended to clear him in the eyes of the public, as he says, why did the one addressed to his friend in this Valley contain the request to have it made public? Again, wc can see no impropriety in a person' accused of the highest crime known to the law, and who claims to be innocent, making public a statement tending to establish his innocence. In I he closing paragraph of his latest letter Mr. Dolan departs fro in the proprieties which he had assumed, so far as to state one fact. He says that he parted with Chapman at Mrs. MeSween’s house when Chapman retired to his room, on the night of the murder, and that that was the last he saw of him. In the former letter he stated that he was with the parties accused of the murder. These two statements are, to say the least, paradoxical, and it is because of just such apparent inconsistencies in his statements that we still consider his denial very weak. We are unable to see wherein he strengthens his case by this last letter, in which lie seems determined to force Thirty-Four into an attitude of opposition to himself. This paper has never said he was guilty. It only published the fact that a most heinous crime had been committed a n d, in the interest of justice, endeavored to ascertain who was the criminal, and, as a matter of news, published an account of the affair which mentioned him as one of the perpetrators, intending to publish any otheraccount which might come to hand. Up to the present moment, no other explanation of the affair has been given, and Tihuty-Four lias done exactly what he requested—suspended judgement until the proper investigation.Though Mr. Dolan b e as innocent as a babe, he certainly has had the misfortune to prejudice his case every time he has appeared in print. if any feeling ,has been aroused against him in the mind of the public, it is no fault of ours. Wc have been entirely impartial in the matter; but he appears on this account, and bemuse we have not defended him against the charge of having committed a crime of which we have no evidence that lie is not guilty, that we are trying to injure him. We have n o feeling in the matter, whatever. Neither Mr. Dolan n o l* Mr. Chapman are, or ever have been, anything more than other strangers to us. Somebod y has committed a murder and, whoever it may be, he should be punished. Wc should be just as well pleased to publish the fact that Mr. Dolan had established his innocence as to announce that the real murderer had been convicted and had expiated his Crime,BLAZER’S MILL,Rio Tux arcs a.The proprietor has added to his other machinery a-Planing Milland is prepared to cut, plane and mutch all kinds of Dimension Stupe to order and deliver it any where.J.
