Petersen, chief of the Justice Department’s Organized Crime Section, which coordinates the Government's fight on crime, rarely speaks on the record to newspaper reporters. He did not seem to know that reporters were attending a conference of law enforcement privately in Washington. What he said created a furore because he linked organized crime and specific labor unions.Four or five years ago, Petersen said that Senator John L. McClellan’s Senate rackets committee was very much concerned about reports of a possible merger between the Teamsters and the International Longshoremen’s Association.
