W; Mo leal I, .Mortally Wounded by Black, and the Latter Slwit IJown and, Left tor Dead—Many Arrests Being Made.* iJoxesboro, Arlc., April 4.—Jonesboro has been in a fever of excitement today over the niurder of a Spaniard and the killing of a prominent man of this city, the leader of a gang of white-caps, at an early hour Sunday morning. George Black, a Spaniard, has been living on his farm a few miles from Jonesboro. About 1 o’clock Sunday morning a gang of about 100 whitecaps, headed by J. W. Metcalfe, of this place, went to Black’s residence and demanded that he open the door. Black refused, whereupon the gang proceeded to batter down the door. The Spaniard’s family became terror-stricken and sought refuge in a w'ardrobe, but the head of the family coolly armed himself with an army musket, loaded Tjvith slugs arid disputed the entrance of the marauders. The moment Metcalfestepped in the door he received the load of slugs in the breast just below the right nipple. The gang then dragged their wodriddd comrade intd the yard, and when Black attempted to leave the house he was shot down and left for dead.After the whitecaps left. Black crawled to the public road, a few hundred yards away, where he was found In a dying condition by a party of negroes.When the news of the tragedy reached Jonesboro the sheriff organized a posse and started in pursuit of the whitecaps. Metcalf was soon found and placed in the railway hospital, where he died Sunday night.Black lingered until Sunday afternoon, when he died. He made a sworn statement in which he testified that he recognized Metcalf, but could not identify the others, as they were all masked. Metcalf refused to make any statement further than that Black was riqt the man they were after.'t’lie sheriff made eight arrests Sud^ day night and eight yesterday on suspicion of being implicated in Black’s murder. Several parties are well known about town and their arrest has created a sensation.
