ERIE — An autopsy will be per formed today on the body of a newborn infant girl found yesterday afternoon in the Glenwood Park area, according to Erie County Coroner Merle Wood. The white infant girl's body was found along the road around 5:40 p.m. by four youths playing in the area. Wood said the baby had been either a normal miscarriage or stillborn, or had died shortly after birth. He said the infant was too far along in the pregnancy term for an abortion to be the likely cause of death. According to investigating Erie police detectives, the four boys had spotted the body at 5:30 p.m. At first, according to Captain Charles Erickson, the boys thought it was a doll, but upon discovering that the towel covered body was a baby, they reported it to neighbors, who called the police. Erickson said the baby had been plac ed at the spot sometime between 5:15 and §:30 p.m. As part of the investigation, police have checked four area hospitals to determine if any newborn infants had been treated for any illness. Police are also checking to see if any women have sought medical attention for post-natal care. Authorities indicated the mother of the dead infant would likely need medical treatment for the possible mis carriage or birth. “It could be that this was just a nor mal miscarriage or stillbirth and the mother just did not know what to do with it,” Wood theorized. It will be up to the autopsy at Hamot Medical Center to determine if the in fant was dead at birth or if she had died later. The exact cause of death will also be investigated in these officials noted that the body was found along the curbside and not along the banks of Mill Creek which flows several feet nearby.
