Exactly what Texas justice is has been pretty hard to pin down lately.Two recent criminal cases will readily single out how vague and shifty justice can be. The James Cross case involved the rape and murder of two collegegirls last summer. The other case involved the rape of a 23-year old housewife last summer by Earlando Williams, 17, who was found guilty two weeks ago.In the Cross trial, the University of Texas student was given a life sentence. Williams wasn’t so lucky though. Williams, who was picked out of a police lineup by thevictim, was sentenced to die in the electric chair . . .Now if one believes justice ran its true course in the Cross trial, he cannot help come to the conclusion that it did not run true in the Williams trial.Cases differ in the persons involved. For one thing, Williams is a Negro. Juries differ. Prosecutors differ. Defense lawyers differ.So how can these inconsistencies in our legal system be eliminated? Perhaps a -computer, programmed completely free of pre-conditioned reflexes and prejudices, could eliminate these inconsistencies.For some reason though, many persons are repulsed computers. They argue that computers are horribly impersonal and inhuman.But until some kind of change is made, human justicewill continue to be in many cases inhumane.The Campus Chat
