A SOUTHS** LrHCIIIX«.MlDDUBABOBOUftH, h'y., March 27.— Another tragedy took place Thursday morning at Cumberland Gap. Tenn., afew miles from here. In which J. A.Burke, the telegraph operator at that place, was shot and instantly killed by Tom llunley, a negro. Burke was on his way home when the negro discharged the eontenta of both barrels of a shotgun at him. te a ring out his eyes, cheeks and t**.*th. He died instantly. '1 he murderer then fled, but was captured here Thursday morning and taken back to the Gap by a circuitous route to avoid meeting a mob w hich had gathered to lynch him. While on their w’ay back they were met by a band of sixty armed men, who took Iiunley from them and hanged him to a tree. IIis body was then riddled w ith bullets, it was one of the most cold blooded and unprovoked murders that has ever disgraced this section. The murderedman was well known and liked here.He formerly resided in Louisville, llunley was from Columbia, Ky.
