ARRESTS MADE INRUM RUNNING PLOTBoston, April 2.L_A rum-running plot of international importance,with headquarters .in Boston, is ex-^ / . * .pected to be revealed as a result of the arrest of Mrs. Lena Costello, Alexander Goldberg and David Poloin a raid on a luxurious apartment ! here. The arrests were made on war-i:irants charging conspiracy to defraud ! the government of ' illegal importa-i tion of liquor. 1 ,^The alleged smuggling and rum-running ring began, according to Special Assistant United States District Attorney Garrol, last summer when one of the persons in the riggantic plot crossed the ocean to Glasgow in quest of .Scotch whiskies, wines and*' brandies that would brings %large profits on this side of the water This person, with almost unlimited financial backing, hired or chartered a large steamship to be used exclusive ly in bringing' the choice liquids. to a point just outside the three-mile government limit, where a base was to be formed.The first voyage threw more than 10,000 cases of_expensive liquors on the aristocratic “bootleg” market of this country and it is said that a steady and very profitable business has continued 'since^ then. Officers claim at the present time it is beingrun on a firm foundation with some*of the wealthiest persons in this and other countries lending financial and 11 moral influence. The visiting promoter who invaded land of gooH liquor is said to have gotten into close relation with one of the most reliable distilling companies of that country and arranged for the supply of unlimited jquantites of the best that money cou^d buy. The runners eater only to jjhe ; people who want the best and have the money to buy in case lots.Back to this strongest of liquor rings, a woman is said to be directing the operations and ,the destinies of the organization.
