Franklinton, La., April 2,1914.John Duncan Held For Attempted MurderTylertown, Miss,, March 2G,— After being trailed twice by blood hounds, John Duncan was arrested yesfcertday or. the charge of attempted murder of his brother, Garland C. Duncan, deputy United States marshal, and the latter’s wife at their home southeast of here. John Duncan was conveyed to the county jail at Magnolia. His preliminary hearing will probably be held here next Tuesday.At 8 o’clock Tuesday night Garland Duncan and his wife went to a rear porch of their home for water. They were fired upon twice at close range with a gun loaded with buckshot. Dunan was wounded in the shoulder and his wife in the left breast. The second discharge went wild and lodged in the roof of the gallery three feet above the couple’s heads.Duncan, carrying his wounded wife inside the house, secured a gun and returned the fire. R. M. Duncan, a brother of Garland, who lives nearby, was summond and secured medical assistance from Hackley, La. He then came here and' telephoned R. L. Gant, at Crystal Springs, to bring his bloodhounds. At the time Mr. Gant and his dogs were at Varnado, La., running down safeblowers who visited that place Tuesday night. Mr. Gant, with his hounds, reached the home of Garland Duncan Wednesday noon.The dogs immediately struck a trail, which they followed to the home of John Duncan, who lives a quarter of a mile away, A sec-ond trail by the dogs was made, and they again followed it to John Duncan’s house, refusing to go further.Deputy Sheriff B. 0. Holmes and Justice of the Peace Frank Davis went to the scene and kept guard over the premises to prevent obliteration, of evidence, John Duncan was arrested by Deputy Holmes. He disclaims any knowledge of the affair.The wounds of Mr. and Mrs. Garlaud Duncan, while serious are not thought to be fatal.Magnolia, Miss., March, 29___John Duncan, in jail here, stoutly protests his innocence. Deputy Sheriff Holmes, who brought the prisoner to Magnolia, states that examination of the gun at Dun. oau’s house showed that it had been fired twice, being a six-shut, puiup gun, and showing four shells in it. Examination of one of the shell* showed that it contained shot and wadding tin* same a;? iho^e fired.It is stated that John Duncan i and his brother, Garland been on bad ti-rms for a long time, Garlan l Duncan has been active in the prosecution of timber depredations in the southern part of Pike county and the northern ]art of Washington Parish,versity of Kansas, one ouuuaj-dnring Kansas Newspaper week in May, and deliver sermons on ‘The Press and the Pulpit.’ They propose to show the people of the state that the newspaper ranks with the church as the most powerful modern agency of social service.Possibilities o: greater cooperation between the press and the church will be pointed out by the Kansas men.Country Boys’ Creed For Young Virginia Farmers.In every schoolhouse in Prince Edward County, Va., a placard containing a creed for the American country boy and dedicated to the Boys Corn Club of Virginia has been posted.
