M-M-IOWA NR INHERIT $900..000 WORTH OF MAHOGANYFOREST IN BRAZILThree-fifths of a $1,500,000 estate representing chiefly a half interest in 750,000 acies of mahogany forest in Brazil, South America, is bequeathd to Iowa rsidents bv the will of the late John Thomas Canty, who died at h;s Brazilian home on Mnv 1st. A fifth is left to Mrs. Ella Jeffords of Olewein, and two-fifths to Judge Canty's seven nephews and nieces at New Hampton. Judge Canty lived near Lawler as a boy and later taught school here.Judge Canty was born in England in 1854 and came to Lawler with his family when a young boy. He lived on a farm near Lawler and later taught school in his home district.In 1875 he went to Minneapolis and studied law. In 1891 he was elected district judge and in 1900 chosen for a place on the Minneapolis supreme bench.He resigned from the supreme court in 1901 and went to South America where he acquired 500,000 acres of land in Brazil. He entered into extensive colonization projects and developed plantations.About a year ago Judge Canty became lost while on an exploration trip and was three days without food or water. From this experience he did not fully recover and his death is attributed to that haidship. He wasnever married.—Spencer Reporter. M-M-
